Welcome to Episode Zero of All Clouds Considered. This one is all about what we’ll be talking about, who this show is for, and what you can expect.

I’ve been in the technology trenches since 1983. Over the years, I’ve invented, patented, and made software that has changed how billions of people do business worldwide.

After acquiring lawful permanent residence status through Microsoft Corporation, I decided it was time to live my dream, so I left Microsoft and started on my own, now with a small team, that focuses on helping businesses benefit from the cloud and helping people use the cloud to advance their career.

My guiding mantra:

Always be learning. And be generous with my knowledge.

In this episode, I’ll discuss:

  • What is All Clouds Considered?

  • Who this podcast is for?

  • The show format.

  • How to get your technology and business questions answered?

What is All Clouds Considered?

All Clouds Considered is an audio and video podcast where I will share my learnings. Occasionally, I will invite other industry experts to join in and share their perspectives through this podcast.

Who this podcast is for?

This podcast is meant for people who want to use the cloud for business and for people who want to advance their professional career.

The show format

Cloud computing is really about sticking to core competence

It has been five years since the departure of management guru CK Prahalad of University of Michigan…the man who strongly influenced me to expand my horizons and learn the world of corporate strategy and internal business. CK is internationally recognized as one of the world’s 10 most influential management gurus. He was twice ranked the world’s most influential business thinker in 2007 and 2009, by the Thinkers50 list of the top management thought leaders in the world.
CK Prahalad coined the phrase Core Competence in an epic article, The Core Competence of the Corporation, published in May–June 1990 issue of the Harvard Business Review.

Core Competency is defined as a harmonized combination of multiple resources and skills that distinguish a firm in the marketplace.

Core competencies fulfill three criteria:

  • Provides potential access to a wide variety of markets.

  • Makes a significant contribution to the perceived customer benefits of the end product.

  • Makes it difficult for competitors to imitate.

Cloud computing is really about sticking to core competenceNilesh

Cloud computing essentially enables businesses to stick to their core competence. If you know how to maintain large scale IT infrastructure better than anybody else, you should be in the business of providing cloud services. If that is not your core competence, you should be focusing on what your core competence is.

Should you be using cloud computing or should you be in the business of providing cloud services? What is your core competence?

Bypass Internet DNS Outage: Use OpenDNS or Google Public DNS

We “love” our Internet service providers – especially so when we are outraged by Internet outage. Today happens to be one such day when Comcast DNS servers started behaving in the middle of video conference with people across the globe.

Thankfully there is a quick and easy way out…and no you don’t need to call Comcast for that… just change the DNS entries in your router to point to 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 for Open DNS or alternatively use Google public DNS at 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 and you are back in business.
